How a Roadtrip is Part of God’s Plan
It’s all Relevant – On The Road and In the Car
Do me a favor and picture this for a moment: you’re in your car, family spread out in their own nooks, listening to some tunes on the radio, snacks tucked into a nearby cooler, pillows and other comforts stashed for when needed. And lying ahead of you is the open road. Ahh, now this is heaven.- The Kingdom series by Chuck Black {cd} – amazing biblical allegory
- The Knights of Arrethtrae series by Chuck Black {cd}
- Adventures in Odyssey {cd – older episodes}
- Radio Classics {Sirius Radio} – episodes of “Burns & Allen”, “Fibber McGee and Molly”, and more
How do you like our selections? Both series by Chuck Black were wonderful reads for both of my kids {perfect for ages 12 and up}. We’ve heard all of the Odyssey cd’s so we’re starting from the beginning again and moving forward until they record a new album. The “Jonathon Park” audio series is also great, but we’ve heard them all recently and not ready to repeat them yet.
And of course, Catz and I will spend a lot of time talking together because that’s what us girls do. It’s also what keeps our hearts in sync as mother and daughter. And as one of those intentional activities, having our talks is something that I never want to skip. My relationship with Catz is just too important!
So now it’s your turn. Have you written a post about your plans for Relevant? Go ahead and link up the url to your post below so we can read more about it. While you’re at it why not grab a button from my sidebar to put on your blog or in your post. And be sure to visit someone else who linked up and show some love. Ready? Go!

Test Driving a Ford Truck and a Request

I think driving a 2011 Ford Explorer to Relevant would be awesome! Do you think Ford would lend me one for our trip? I’d love to drive this new version of the classic SUV, which seems more like a car and less like a truck. TechDaddy and I used to own a 2008 Explorer…I’d love to drive a 2011 model and tell you all about the new changes. Well, I guess we’ll see!You also might like...
Relevant – The Plan
Have you ever wanted something so much, but then you couldn’t have it? In 2010, I planned for it but didn’t get to go to the Relevant Conference in Harrisburg, PA, partly due to health reasons. Not going was a complete bummer but ended up being okay with me as I knew it was part of God’s timing for me to wait and heal. {Which I did, thank you Jesus!} Waiting can be a drag sometimes but so worth it in the end, especially when good things follow close behind. Like the Relevant ’11 Conference.- sew some necessary accessories {makeup bags, iPad case, iPhone pouches, giveaway bags, pj’s}
- have stationary goods made {business cards, labels, etc.}
- plan out roadtrip visits on our drive from Orlando to Harrisburg and back {burger shacks, bakeries, fun family spots, Chik-Fil-A, Cracker Barrel, Washington D.C., etc.)
- plan suggest someone else plan a get-together with any early arrivals at the hotel {Something chocolate related sounds fun!}
- complete redesign of our blogs and move to WordPress {by June 1st, hopefully}
- find and woo sponsors {C’mon, you know you’re out there!}
- secure a car for the trip {Ford? Chevy? Any takers?}
- craft a surprise for each attendee

5 Minute Friday: On distance
Hey there! Let’s join Lisa-Jo at The Gypsy Mama for some Friday writing! Here are the rules:Distance is what I seek. From this house, this neighborhood, this town. But I yearn for it not in the sense that I need to escape. On the contrary I want to move and travel and be close. But not here.
Our rv plans are yet to be realized, but I feel God getting us ready. The distance I crave from here will someday be replaced by the need to make connections as we travel. Our stops in each town, across this nation, will be precious I think. To meet people, fill in needs, listen to hearts who hurt and rejoice and laugh and cry.
This is the distance I seek. As long as Jesus is traveling with us. With Him I want no distance, only closeness and guidance to who needs us most next. Closeness. The bond that will continue to form within my family, between sister and brother, parent and child, husband and wife. That closeness God will keep providing in answer to the distance I long for now.
That was pretty good for a two-pointer-finger-hunt-and-peck-typist, don’t you think? If you can call that “typing”, which TechDaddy is certainly shaking his head and saying “no, that’s not typing.” {{Whatever you say, dear.}} So what’s your version of “On Distance”? Update City
So, so much has been happening here lately. But really, will it ever stop? No, who am I kidding. A new season, a new set of changes. Otherwise life would be static. And boring. Yechh.
This is really just a quick update. Or you could say this teeny little post is a way for me to remind myself of bigger posts that I need to write. Yikes, this sounds boring.
Okay, let’s keep moving here.
Update #1: In July I had a brain MRI due to headaches and abnormal dizziness {not to be confused with normal dizziness}. I am happy to say the results showed no tumors of any kind. Thank you, Jesus! Instead, I have something called Meniere’s disease, which is not life-threatening so I really don’t know why it’s called a disease at all, but those ponderings are for another post.
Update #2: Yes, we are still planning to sell our house and hit the road for a year in an rv. It’s been a while since I last mentioned this life-changing plan, but that post is coming up soon as well. In fact, I’ll be doing a regular series on that area of my life.
Update #3: I spent this past week following the Compassion bloggers on their trip to Guatemala via Twitter and their blogs. And my heart is wrecked. Much more on this soon.
Update #4: About one year ago I wrote about the top 10 reasons I love my iPhone. {Which sounds absurd after what I’ve been reading about Guatemala.} That was before TechDaddy upgraded me to the iPhone 4. And iOS4. Need I say more? Just wait until you read my post about this new and improved delivery from Apple. I’m guaranteed to sound like a techno-geek. {Which I’m not.}
Update #5: This year has been one of being intentional, and how I use my camera is no exception. Since January I have taken classes and workshops on how to rock my Nikon, and I’m loving it. I cannot wait to tell you about where God is leading me with this!
Update #6: This is our tenth year to homeschool the chicklets, and I’m pretty excited about where we are in this journey. With a 7th grader and a 9th grader, I have never been more content and relaxed with how our year has been going. For real.
Well, that’s it for now. I apologize for having no pictures in this post. What a faux pas…I’m so embarrassed! {crickets chirping} Okay, I’m over it!
Each of these updates will be a future post {or series of posts} as I work life into the equation. Excuse me now while I skip off to spend some time recharging with my sweet family. {Where is my camera?!}

Praying for Snow
I know, I know. Just yesterday I was lauding the fact that here, in Florida, we have been without snow while almost the rest of the nation has been inundated with the stuff.
I have always been content that Florida has remained as God has intended this state to be. Snow-free.
So it might be a surprise to anyone reading this that I now want snow. Here. At my house.
{{A surprise to everyone but you, Honey, since you know how often I change my mind. Wink, wink.}}
In fact, I’m so eagar for snow that I’m praying for it. This is a surprise to me since snow has never been on my prayer list or shown up in my prayer journal. Not once.
But as the local weather forecasters have been dangling the idea of snow over my head for a few days now, I am very hopeful — prayerful — that the frozen precipitation will actually arrive at my house this weekend.
Notice that I said “arrive at my house“. I know full well that any snowflakes in these-here-parts will melt as soon as they hit the ground, if not sooner. C’mon, I was born but not yesterday.
I also have previous experience with Florisnow — my own favorite new label for silly snowflakes that try to fall in the Sunshine state. When I was a little cutie all of 8-years-old and living in South Florida, we were surprised with a mere shimmering of Florida snow in January.
I was home with the chicken pox and my mom called me to come outside. As my dad was getting ready to leave for work, we caught sight of little Flori-flakes {hee hee} melting as they landed on his coat. It was neato! I’ll never forget that moment.
And so I’d love to share a moment like that with my chicklets and hubby. We’ll see what God has planned. Nothing is impossible with Him. Even snow in Florida.

Nature…It’s in My Yard!
I love nature.
Reeallly, really love it. Love being outside, walking barefoot, squishing mud through my toes, spotting wildlife, taking pix of all of it. Love it.
Mr.C loves nature, too. If he sees something outside move, then he’s got to be out the door investigating it in a millisecond. He’ll take pictures, catch it, touch it, try to smuggle it into the house.
Catz loves animals and some nature. You got a baby squirrel who needs to be hand-raised? She’s your girl. {Her mama taught her that, thankyouverymuch!} But show her a bug, even a cute one, and you’ll see her high-tail it to the nearest place she can hide. And yes, there are cute bugs.
Hubby likes nature…from afar. I think that comes from his growing up just outside Chicago. Not a lot of nature there. Probably why, when he first moved to Florida, he commented that ”a good snake is a dead snake.” {shaking my head} Ironic since we’ve had at least two snake-encounters per year since then.
But sometimes I get just a bit verklempt over this thing I love called nature. Like what we discovered just the other day.
Check out the photo below. It’s a squirrel nesting box that Hubby built and secured about 10 feet up in our elm tree last November. It’s a pretty good size at 18″ tall and 10″ square. Worked perfectly last winter when we released our three rehabbed squirrels.
Now, check out the next shot. It’s an Epipen used to treat folks for anaphalaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction. {Psst! It’s mine and I’m right here typing this, so everything is a-okay.}. Do you know what these two pix have in common?
You guessed it — bees! Little did we know that our cute squirrel box, which the squirrels vacated last spring, had now become home to a hive of honeybees. When I saw it I was so excited! Honey-making was going on in our front yard! How cool is that?!
Until my son {my 5′ protector} thrust my epipen into my pocket. And I was reminded to be careful!
Instead of exterminating the flying critters, we chose to relocate them since honeybees are in short supply in the U.S.A. For various reasons, their numbers are dwindling more and more every year. And we all know how important honeybees are to our food supply.
Thankfully, I was able to reach the wonderful folks from Fredrickson Apiary here in Florida. {Psst! An apiary is where they raise bees for honey, honeycomb, and all that good stuff.} Bill and his lovely wife, Marion, drove all the way to my house early this morning {7:00 am} and removed the beehive. It was the neatest thing to watch!
Okay, actually Hubby wouldn’t let me near the tree {cuz he thinks I’m cute and wants to keep me around}, but he videotaped the Fredrickson’s do their thing. This couple, while remaining happy and laid back, used a ‘smoker’ to corral the bees who were hanging around outside the entrance. Those bees marched right inside with the rest and just stayed put. Amazing!
Bill put a piece of metal screening over the entrance to keep them inside until he could get them back to his farm. Here’s a shot of the hive before the wire was fastened. Look at all the honeycomb! Bill and Marion said the hive was probably begun about 2-3 months ago. Wow.
When I mentioned that I mow the grass under that tree every week, and wow wasn’t I blessed to have never been stung, their response surprised me. They said that these European honeybees – which nest in trees, chimneys, and just about any old hole up high – just go about their business collecting for the hive and are not aggressive. {On the other hand, African bees – which nest in old tire swings, culverts, or other places down low - are very aggressive.}
So now we have a new field trip location to visit. The apiary just added a bakery {where the only sweetener Marion uses is honey}and another building. Hubby and the kids will be the ones donning the protective, white suits to visit the bee yard. But I plan to be inside – checking out the bakery, of course.
